When did we stop being curious?

Bring back the playfulness this summer

What if we have gotten self-care all wrong? The celery juice, the infrared saunas, and the high-protein, low-fat diets surely contribute to our overall well-being, but what if we can just go back to the basics? In a previous article, I wrote about how art can be the missing link in our healing journey, putting us into a flow state and helping us overcome our fear of rejection. It’s safe to say that getting into the habit of creating imperfect art played a huge part in my own journey of self-discovery. However, what led me to this journey in the first place was my curiosity. Recent events, which left me energetically drained and unsure about my future, led me to a fascinating discovery about myself: As long as I stay curious, everything will be alright eventually.

In the midst of potty training our kids, sending emails, and barely managing to text back our friends, we often get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget about the endless opportunities we have yet to grasp, the friends we have yet to meet, the foreign countries we have yet to explore, and the life-changing knowledge we have yet to discover. How silly of us not to be bursting with curiosity every single day.

Never before has a generation had unlimited access to knowledge for free, yet we pretend this isn't the greatest opportunity of our lifetime. We are living our ancestors' wildest dreams, and we take it for granted. Unlike our ancestors, we don't have to travel far or take out utopic loans to broaden our knowledge. We can learn how to knit a sweater through YouTube. We can learn a new language with a free app. We can take Harvard courses for free. We can learn about nutrition, the laws of the universe, entrepreneurship, history, nail design, poetry, marketing, and pottery—all from the comfort of our own homes, completely for free. Not only do we live in a time when we have access to a wealth of knowledge, but we also have the freedom to share our deepest thoughts, talents, and interests with the world. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Substack not only allow us to dive into other people's worlds but also to create our own little online universe and find our own tribe. Our ancestors would’ve killed for this.

Yet, many of us have lost that spark of curiosity for topics outside our comfort zones because we tell ourselves we don't have the time or we're afraid to be beginners at something. Trust me, I'm guilty of these thoughts. I've talked myself out of diving deeper into knowledge I'm interested in exploring because I didn't see the return on investment and because I felt intimidated to be a beginner at something others had already mastered.

But here's the thing: we need to explore new territories just for the fun of it. Not because it gives us better career opportunities, not because we need to strive for excellence, and most definitely not to turn it into a side hustle.

The best part is, approaching new territories with curiosity gives us the permission to fuck up. If we operate from the energy of curiosity, there are no expectations or outcomes attached and if there are no expectations or outcomes attached, we simply cannot fail. How great is that? Once we allow ourselves to treat every decision in life as an experiment, it does not only become much easier to leave our comfort zones, but also to detach from the outcome. Instead of worrying about which path might the right one, we become the scientist who is simply experimenting with different ideas.

I hope these words serve as a reminder of all the possibilities that are right in front of you whenever you feel lost and afraid of taking the wrong path. There is no wrong or right, there's just this moment in time and what we decide to do with it. Let’s treat our lives as the biggest experiment and have a blast doing so!
